Mayaman lives in Tigama, Mali – a village on the frontline of climate change. Along with other women in her community, she is defying the odds to create a thriving oasis that can feed local families, even in times of drought.
Thanks to funding raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, a new water distribution system installed with the help of WaterAid means Mayaman and her community can reliably access clean water to grow tomatoes, onions, papayas and other produce.
The gardens had been difficult to harvest for years, with little or no produce and a single unreliable borehole.
Mayaman says:
Gardening means a lot to us.
“The construction of the borehole has motivated everyone again. We start earlier and make two harvests now as we have more water available. Previously many of our vegetables did not grow. But the construction of the borehole has changed that.
